Repurpose Used Candle Jars

Let’s look at some ways to reuse those candle jars after the wax is spent.

I get asked pretty often, how to clean out a jar for reuse.

The easiest way is to place jar in freezer for about an hour to let the wax shrink and get brittle. Remove jar from freezer and use a screwdriver or plastic eating utensil to pry the wax from jar.

We use dawn dish detergent and dry eraser pads to remove wax from surfaces in our candle studio and it works perfectly.

After that use a bit of rubbing alcohol to wipe container to remove any leftover grime or oils.

Ta-Da, all that’s left is a gorgeous container.

Here are some great ideas on what to do with it.

  1. Reuse as a pencil holder on a desk. Our White Matte Tumblers with gold interior would totally bring some class to any desk. You could also corral all those push pins, staples or paper clips into a matching jar with lid.

2. Use as a vase for flowers. Any clear jar would be so cute with a single bud in it.

3. Collect a same style set and use as bathroom storage. I don’t know about you, but it makes a difference in my day if I can grab what I need right away. Store things like Q-tips, Make-up brushes, toothpaste, dental floss, hair ties, Bobby pins or anything you can think of in a repurposed jar.

4. Store sewing set in a cute jar and leave that thing out as decoration. It’s so much easier to mend clothes if basic sewing items are nearby. Plus, this will be way cuter than your grandma’s repurposed cookie tin.

5. Store small kids toys or crayons in jar with lid.

6.Reuse that jar as a jewelry holder for your suitcase or dresser.

7.Place one by the kitchen sink to put a ring in before you do the dishes.

8.Put a clean, empty pretty jar by the washing machine to collect the change that falls from your son’s pants pockets or toys, or notes of paper (Yes, Austin I’m talking about you!).

9. Keep a jar on the nightstand to place earrings in case you go to bed with them on.

10. Put a universal screwdriver and some spare screws in the jar and keep under kitchen sink for quick projects around home.

11. Give them to the handy person in the home to organize their toolbox.

12. Keep empty jar in bathroom with lid in order to turn nearly empty bottles upside down and let gravity get the last bits of product out of your expensive beauty containers.

13. Place container anywhere you like fragrance, fill with cotton balls and add a touch of baking vanilla for a warm scent.

14. Combine all the nearly used candles into jar and place on stove. If you have a gas stove the heat from pilot will warm the wax. Please do not place any candle on the burner of stove, it will explode.

15. Collect and store flower seeds in pretty used candle jars to plant in spring.

16. Use as a planter. Mini terrariums are so cute!

17. Store cupcake liners in jar so they don’t get crushed or dirty in cabinet.

18. Store decorating tips from frosting or tubes or frosting in jars with lids.

19. Make a snow globe with a candle jar that has a lid.

20. Create an ornament by placing mementos in jar, wrap wire around jar and hang on Christmas tree. Baby hats and birth bracelets, kids toy they outgrow like matchbox cars or Polly pockets would all look cute on tree.

21. Place string of lights in a jar as a nightlight. Bonus points if they are solar lights placed by a window to charge during day.

At Magnolia & Willows, we love homes, and we love our environment. It is a pleasure to consider how to reuse items before allowing them to enter the garbage facilities.
